The inaugural Spring Block Party: Find Your Future transformed the Cilker Lawn into a high-energy celebration on February 26, welcoming approximately 350 high school and adult school students to West Valley College. With nearly 600 total guests, the dynamic event created a highly engaging and experiential atmosphere where both prospective and returning students had the opportunity to explore schools and pathway programs, connect with program leads and peers, and experience a sense of greater belonging at WVC.
Representing 37 academic and service areas, WVC staff hosted informational tables and activity stations, fostering engagement and impactful conversations with attendees during this inaugural event. Student ambassadors welcomed guests, provided tours and answered prospective student questions. A live DJ, dance-off by Viking mascots Vik and Viktoria, delicious food stations, face painting, and outdoor games also elevated the fun factor.
“Creating a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that encourages exploration helps humanize the college experience and builds authentic connections for prospective students,” said Kailani Bowers, WVC Director of Outreach and Recruitment.
Bowers also shared “It is not just an event, but a strategic outreach model that strengthens pipelines, increases visibility, and reinforces WVC’s role as a student-centered institution.”
Led by the Strategy & Equity Team, the Spring Block Party reflects the college’s commitment to innovative, equity-minded engagement with particular emphasis on connecting with members of historically underrepresented communities. In an effort to remove barriers to participation, bus transport funding was provided for schools and districts including the Metropolitan Education District, Milpitas Adult School, Campbell Adult Center, and Del Mar, Westmont, Kathleen MacDonald, Wilson, Wilcox, and Santa Clara high schools.
